As evening falls and the day gives way to night, “Darkness Is Falling” brings the atmosphere of an old Christmas tradition into Boney M.’s festive music collection. The song is associated with the Austrian Christmas carol “Es wird scho glei dumpa,” a traditional lullaby that speaks to the quiet of night and the tender scene surrounding the infant Jesus. Its gentle imagery offers a more peaceful side of Christmas, centred on the stillness and wonder of the season.
Unlike carols that focus on grand celebrations or joyful declarations, this global song evokes a quieter moment, inviting listeners to reflect on the child at the heart of the Christmas story. Boney M.’s recording appears on the group’s 1981 Christmas album, alongside other seasonal favourites. The traditional roots give the song a different character within the collection, connecting listeners with the warmth of an older Christmas custom. It is a fitting choice for a calm festive evening, when the noise of celebrations fades and attention turns to the meaning of Christ’s birth.
