Why are Nigerian pastors so concerned about the kind of songs Nigerian gospel music singers sing? Some pastors in Nigeria are interested in what the Christian community listens to when it comes to music. They are of the opinion that Christian music should be sacred, with lyrics that are purely godly, without any worldly wording or lyrics, and without partnering with unbelievers. While some of these men of God might be overreacting and ignorant, some actually know what they are saying or advocating. We need to get this clear: music is spiritual and has the capacity to influence individuals. In fact, music can be easily understood and remembered more than just preaching a sermon. Over the years, the gospel music scene has come under criticism because some of our gospel singers are doing the unusual. For the young generation not to take this as the norm, some pastors had to speak out. Nevertheless, I personally can’t judge some of these Christian singers, for I do not know their motives. In the past, the church kicked against Afrogospel, but today, it’s one of the music genres loved by many young Christians. So, only God knows the actual motives of some Christian artists, but that does not automatically eradicate criticism.
